Oswego State Downtown exhibition to focus on zoo animals as refugees

An exhibition starting Friday, Nov. 3, at Oswego State Downtown will feature the work of J. Lachlan Kadick, a SUNY Oswego alumnus and Syracuse City School District teacher whose work speaks to the displacement of zoo animals.

The exhibition, titled "J. Lachlan Kadick: Displacement," will run through Jan. 24. A reception for the artist will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10, at the gallery in the branch of the college store at West First and Bridge streets in Oswego.

A part of SUNY Oswego's Downtown Artist Series, the reception will feature the poetry and graphic design of students Gage Slachciak and Shanika Scarborough, respectively, in reaction to Kadick's art, according to Amy Bartell, the college's coordinator of community arts exhibitions.

The "Displacement" series explores zoo animals, often refugees, or bred for their oddity, according to an artist's statement. They are outside of their true environment, Kadich said, and the artist's work speaks to their environment, displacement, alternate realities and habitats. A 2011 bachelor of fine arts and 2013 master of art education recipient at SUNY Oswego, Kadick attempts to observe and paint these creatures without pretense, through a lens a truth.

Oswego State Downtown is open noon to 5 p.m. Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursdays and Fridasy, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. For more information, contact the SUNY Oswego art department at 315-312-2111.
