SUNY Oswego’s art department has begun gearing up for fall sessions of “At the Art Studio,” a workshop series for children and young adults from 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays, Oct. 8 to Nov. 12, in Tyler Hall.
Parents wishing to register children in grades 1 through 12 for age-appropriate sessions need to do so by Oct. 6. Organizers urge early registration, as space is limited. The fee per child is $59; income-based scholarships are available.
Children in grades 1 to 3 will explore a range of artistic materials and methods in 2D and 3D forms. Students in grades 4 to 6 will have an opportunity to design their own character and bring it to life through 2D and 3D techniques. For 7th- through 9th-grade students, a variety of printmaking and bookbinding techniques will result in artist books created using repurposed and up-cycled materials. The oldest students, in grades 10 to 12, will use various materials, digital media and creative processes to find patterns in everyday life and create imagery filled with patterns of their own creation.
“At the Art Studio” began as a response to adults in the community who asked about more opportunities for their children. During the fall 2015 inaugural sessions, 30 students took part in sessions divided into three age groups. A series of projects culminated in an exhibition on the last day. With an emphasis on the individuality of expression, the students investigated the use of themes, exploring various materials and methods for making visual artworks.
With programs now running each season, including summer, “At the Art Studio” is meant to complement existing opportunities, giving children the chance to explore their artistic interests over the course of multiple sessions. The primary goal is to provide young artists in the area with the skills and resources necessary to develop their creative process.
Supported in part by a grant from the Richard S. Shineman Foundation, “At the Art Studio” is administered through the Research Foundation for SUNY in the college’s Office of Research and Sponsored Programs.
