Two of SUNY Oswego’s signatures -- Sheldon Hall and snow -- enliven a scene for college President Deborah F. Stanley’s 2017 seasons greeting video.

In a ceremony following the Lakers’ 5-1 victory Jan. 19 over Cortland at Marano Campus arena, players and coaches of the 2017-18 Oswego State men’s hockey team gather around Ed Gosek (back row, center) -- representing generations of Lakers and other students and coaches mentored by him -- as Gosek recorded his 300th win as Oswego’s head coach. With a winning percentage of .756, Gosek has the highest winning percentage of all current Division III coaches. Men’s hockey captain Mitchell Herlihey (#17) skates along with Arlyn France, 4 (in jersey), and Genevieve France, 6, during the annual Holiday Skate with the Lakers fundraiser for the SEFA/United Way campaign. This year, the event featuring members of the men’s and women’s hockey teams, holiday music, a jersey raffle and a visit from Santa Claus raised $532 to support a variety of local causes.

Following the fall 2017 semester, more than 325 undergraduates received their bachelor’s degrees and 60 graduate students received master’s degrees and/or advanced certificates.

Jeff Knauss, a 2007 SUNY Oswego public relations graduate and co-founder of award-winning digital marketing agency The Digital Hyve, delivered an engaging and entertaining keynote speech at December Commencement, Dec. 16 in the Marano Campus Center.

Jessica Dorans (left), a senior accounting major and Army veteran, speaks Dec. 6 to WSYR NewsChannel 9’s Jennifer Saunders for a story on the one-year anniversary of the Battle Buddy Center in the Veterans Lounge in Hewitt. New York State Industries for the Disabled Inc. designated the center to serve as a safe haven for veterans to socialize with each other and receive services that are unique to their military backgrounds.

Alok Kumar, Distinguished Teaching Professor of physics, discusses “Ancient Indian Science” on Nov. 29 as part of Year of India programming at the college. A published author on the topic, his talk included ancient Indian contributions to science (such as the crucial numerical concept of zero) and outlined the integrated relationship among science, humanity and religion.

More than 1,250 SUNY Oswego students participated in the fall semester's Miss-A-Meal fundraiser, netting $4,159 for United for Puerto Rico, a fundraising collaborative to provide relief to the Hurricane Maria-damaged land. SUNY Oswego’s committee for the State Employees Federated Appeal organized events and a payroll deduction campaign that raised $27,821 for charities locally and around the globe.

Margaret Lloyd, director of the Office of Student Accounts, speaks Jan. 17 during a winter breakout session about the state's Excelsior Scholarship, which included a question-and-answer session. The college’s Center of Excellence in Learning and Teaching, led by Director John Kane of the economics faculty and Associate Director Rebecca Mushtare of the art faculty, organized two weeks’ worth of professional development presentations during winter breakout, assisting faculty and staff presenters from across campus and several guest presenters with space needs in Penfield Library and videoconferencing for remote attendees.
