Self-guided snowshoeing was a featured activity Feb. 24 during the first Wellness Day at Rice Creek Field Station. Enjoying the outdoor experience are Matthew Broadnax, a freshman zoology major, and Nicole Rose, a junior zoology major and sustainability minor. The two are student groundskeepers at Rice Creek who provided assistance with the snowshoes and trail maps.

Ibtihaj Muhammad (left), the first American woman to to compete, and medal, in a hijab during the Olympics, presented her story via Zoom March 9 to a SUNY Oswego audience in the latest installment of the “I Am Oz” Diversity Speaker Series. Muhammad is an author, entrepreneur, activist, speaker and a 2016 Olympic bronze medalist, five-time Senior World medalist and World Champion in 2016. Celinet Duran, a criminal justice faculty member, moderated the discussion and student Q&A.

Sustainability Office interns Jackson DeClerck (left), a junior technology management major, and Sarah Smelko, a junior global studies major, both second semester juniors, tap sugar maple trees March 3 in Sheldon Park between Culkin Hall and Hewitt. They have been collecting from seven trees since Feb. 26, part of a student team collecting just over 40 gallons of sap -- enough to produce one gallon of maple syrup which Auxiliary Services will prepare for residential dining halls.

In a Women's History Month keynote March 19, Dr. Karissa Sanbonmatsu spoke about "Epigenetics and The Biology of Gender." She is a structural biologist at Los Alamos National Laboratory, where she leads the Sanbonmatsu Laboratory, and is an advocate for LGBTQ+ scientists. The Women's Center, in collaboration with ALANA (African, Latino, Asian and Native American) organizations and the gender and women's studies program hosted the event moderated by Tyjhier Goodman, Women's Center president, and Emma Colling, Women's Center vice president.

Rice Creek Field Station offered a natural setting on the March 23 Wellness Day for several art and nature activities open to the campus community. A March 23 Wellness Day event offered to Paint Your Stress Away in Hewitt Ballroom, where participants could choose from a variety of items to paint with provided supplies. Painting colors onto shapes cut from wood are Grace Clayton (left), a freshman computer science major, and Sarah Krueger, a freshman marketing major. The event was facilitated by the Dean of Students Office and Counseling Services Center. 

Spring sports teams have started practices and a limited number of games. The women's lacrosse team, pictured here, started their season March 20 with a 20-14 win over Morrisville.

SUNY Oswego students from Myanmar presented “Myanmar Military Coup: What is Happening and Why,” a panel presentation on the recent military coup in Myanmar during an engaging and well-attended March 11 event via Zoom. The student panel discussed Myanmar political history since the first coup in 1961 and explained some of the effects that citizens are experiencing today. Most of the political events in Myanmar are repeating again and again, this event being the third military coup since 1961. Students on campus were also able to join the virtual program sponsored by the Hart Hall Global Living and Learning Center, at Late Night in Cooper, which featured some traditional food as well.

A World 101 panel exploring “Nativism and Globalism” on March 16 discussed globalization and its impacts led by Karol Cooper of the English department, Ana Djukic-Cocks of modern languages and literatures, and Murat Yaşar (pictured) of history. Organizers included political science faculty member Lisa Glidden; Joshua McKweon, associate provost for international education and programs; and communication studies faculty member Ulises Mejias, director of the college’s Institute for Global Engagement (IGE). The World 101 program is an initiative by the Council on Foreign Relations intended to "help the American public build an understanding of today’s most pressing issues and how those issues are relevant to them." The panel discussion was a collaboration by SUNY Oswego's Office of International Education and Programs, the global and international studies program and IGE.
