Alumna Dawn Marcoccia, class of 1993 and wardrobe designer for the Broadway production “The Band's Visit,” makes a presentation March 22 to Greg Brewster’s class in “Stage Electronics and Mechanics” -- one of three classroom visits and a Pizza with Professionals appearance she made on behalf of the Alumni-In-Residence program. In this class, she explained many details about LED lights, related electronics, radio controller receivers and how they were installed into the dancers’ costumes at Radio City NYC.

Aspiring teachers gather March 15 in Sheldon Hall ballroom for a workshop with a host of classroom management strategies while engaging them as if the practice teachers were themselves the students. Organized by the School of Education’s curriculum and instruction department, the workshop’s agenda, led by Jonathan Cornue (pictured), staff and curriculum development specialist at Madison-Oneida BOCES, dealt with classroom communication and demeanor, routines and procedures, lesson design, expectations and relationships, classroom design and the “difficult” child.

John-Michael Keyes, founder of the "I Love U Guys" foundation and the Standard Response Protocol, speaks at the college’s Spring School Safety Symposium on March 28 in Room 101 of Lanigan Hall. After his daughter Emily was fatally shot in 2006 in an hours-long hostage situation at her school, he came to dedicate his life to trying to prevent more deaths. His talk at Oswego, sponsored in part by the David F. Cutler ‘74 Public Justice Excellence Fund, earned a standing ovation from an audience that included law enforcement, first responders, students, faculty, staff and community members. The next day he offered an on-campus training, coordinated by public justice faculty member Jaclyn Schildkraut, an internationally recognized expert on mass shootings who invited Keyes to speak.

Students applaud noted filmmaker Rita Coburn's documentary "Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise" following a screening March 27 in Marano Campus Center auditorium. Francisco Suárez, a communication studies faculty member, organized the event in advance of Coburn’s visit to campus April 17 for a Voices of Diversity appearance. He said 161 students attended the screening. “The students' engagement and enthusiasm for what they watched and learned with this documentary was remarkable,” Suarez said. “In addition to their excitement for Rita Coburn's visit to SUNY Oswego, we enticed them to put together an excellent compilation video of the event." In response to that piece, "To Rita, with Love" (screen shot pictured), Coburn sent back a thank-you video.

The Oswego State softball team defeated Cortland, 2-1, in its home opener March 31. Starting pitcher Rebecca Vilchez (pictured batting against Wooster on March 16) outdueled her Cortland counterpart, pitching a complete game and allowing just one run. Vilchez also drove in the game's tying run and scored the winning run. The softball team (8-6 overall, 1-1 in the SUNY Athletic Conference) next is scheduled to play Utica in a non-league game at 4 p.m. today at Laker Softball Field. (Photo by Dave Schofield)

The Lakers baseball team swept New Paltz in a three-game series last weekend, 12-1 and 7-0 in a doubleheader Friday and 6-4 Saturday. Oswego's three starting pitchers -- Brian Nolan (pictured against Fredonia on March 17), Robert Donnelly and Reston Pettit -- did not allow a run in 20 of the innings pitched. Oswego State (13-5 overall, 5-1 in the SUNYAC) next is scheduled to travel to St. Lawrence for a non-league game at 4 p.m. today. (Photo by Dave Schofield)
