SUNY Chancellor Kristina M. Student-run TV station WTOP hosts SUNY Chancellor Kristina M. Johnson for an interview with student media outlets also including WNYO radio and The Oswegonian during her Nov. 7 visit to SUNY Oswego. Joining her from left are Michael Marrano, news director for WNYO; Alexander Gault-Pierre, managing editor of The Oswegonian; and Joshua Holfoth, vice president of operations at WTOP. Her stop at WTOP’s Al Roker Studio was one of several in her tour of campus, which was the 52nd of the State University’s 64 campuses that Johnson, who began as chancellor in September 2017, has visited.

SUNY Chancellor Kristina M. Johnson greets senior human development major Deniela Mejia, president of Two and a Half, along the Marano Campus Center concourse as the student group staffed an information table. Seeking to reduce the statistic that every “two and a half minutes” someone is sexually assaulted in the United States, the group serves as a sexual assault, domestic violence and human rights awareness group on the SUNY Oswego campus. Mejia was one of a number of student leaders Johnson met during her trip to campus Nov. 7.

Alumnus Tom Winiarski, class of 1991 and now NBCUniversal’s executive vice president for planning and monetization, Advertising Sales, speaks with a class Oct. 30 in 219 Rich Hall. The day before, Winiarski joined a panel of executives and recruiters from his company, providing students an opportunity to learn about entry-level positions and NBCU's award-winning Campus 2 Career Internship program, and more. Hart Global Awareness Conference keynote speaker Suki Kim, who lived undercover in North Korea for immersive journalism, delivers her talk Nov. 10 in Sheldon Hall ballroom. The investigative journalist and novelist, born and raised in South Korea, has traveled to North Korea since 2002, when she entered Pyongyang for a cover feature for the New York Review of Books. After spending six months in Pyongyang gaining insights into the psychology of those who would rule North Korea after Kim Jong II, she wrote a bestselling book titled “Without You, There is No Us: Undercover Among the Sons of North Korea’s Elite.”

At the Veterans Day unveiling and dedication of a new plaque and monument commemorating the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I are (from left) college President Deborah F. Stanley, Oswego Town Supervisor Richard Kaulfuss and Oswego Mayor William J. Barlow Jr. The plaque makes particular note of Jesse Merle Hewitt, who, among 20 Oswego Normal School students in the war, made the ultimate sacrifice. Hewitt Union -- the future Hewitt Hall once renovations are made for the School of Communication, Media and the Arts -- is named for the veteran, who was killed in France in 1918.

The “Stronger Than Hate” candlelight vigil Nov. 2 at the Class of 1989 Peace Free and Easy Memorial between Seneca Hall and the bridge to Tyler Hall drew a host of students, administrators and faculty, including Student Association President Eusebio Omar van Reenen and SUNY Oswego President Deborah F. Stanley, paying respect and homage to those impacted by the Kroger shooting in Kentucky and the massacre in a Pittsburgh synagogue.

Scholar and sports agent Wonyul Bae talks Nov. 8 in 133 Marano Campus Center on "Why Are Korean Women So Good at Golf?" as a speaker for the Year of Korea, a series of educational, cultural and entertainment events coordinated by the college’s Institute for Global Engagement. Bae’s primary areas of scholarly interest are sports marketing, sponsorship, intercollegiate sport and sports agency. Currently, he is researching, publishing and presenting about the golf participation motivation of Korean and American students who attend universities in the United States, and the reasons why Korean professional female golfers have secured such a dominant position on the LPGA Tour. Bae is also a basketball agent for the Korean Professional Basketball League.

The tabling event was part of the Grad-itude Project, recognizing that people who express gratitude on a regular basis have higher levels of optimism, physical well-being and determination, and dovetails with a week of events celebrating the 70th anniversary of graduate education at the college.

Laker freshman forward Travis Broughman launches himself toward the goal Nov. 10 in Oswego’s 4-2 victory in a matchup of two teams ranked high nationally. Now No. 3 in the USCHO ranking of NCAA Division III men’s teams, the Laker men’s hockey team never trailed against the Hobart Statesmen, now ranked 12th in the nation. Oswego State moved to 3-0 heading into Friday’s SUNY Athletic Conference game at Fredonia.
