Myles Felton, an outfielder for the Laker baseball team, speaks at a Feb. 23 news conference where SUNY Chancellor Jim Malatras (left) announced plans for the SUNY Athletic Conference will resume play March 20 for spring sports including baseball, softball, track and field, lacrosse and tennis with a variety of health and safety measures in place. SUNY Oswego’s 32nd annual Martin Luther King Celebration keynote featured Nikole Hannah-Jones (pictured at right in this screenshot), the Pultizer Prize-winning creator of the New York Times Magazine’s “The 1619 Project,” about the history and lasting legacy of American slavery. “A Conversation on Justice, Race and Healing” was moderated by Karol Cooper, an English and creative writing faculty member.

SUNY Oswego’s 32nd annual Martin Luther King Celebration, held virtually Feb. 9, began in stride with observations from speakers including college president Deborah F. Stanley; Student Association president Lizeth Ortega; Black Student Union president Kayla Biles; followed by the Oswego Gospel Choir performance of the Black National Anthem "Lift Every Voice and Sing" (pictured). The keynote featured Nikole Hannah-Jones, the award-winning creator of the New York Times Magazine’s “The 1619 Project,” about the history and lasting legacy of American slavery.

Hayley Mosher, a senior geology major, studies lake bottom samples Feb. 6 taken from Searles Lake located in Southern California's Mohave Desert. Her research is part of a larger long-term study conducted by SUNY Oswego students and faculty along with four other colleges and universities to study the history of water levels spanning the past 150,000 years of now dry lake beds in North America’s Death Valley and Searles Lake in Southern California’s Mohave Desert. In January 2020, atmospheric and geological sciences faculty member Justin Stroup, students Mosher and James Coble, and Richard Frieman (pictured), instruction support technician, met other researchers from across the country in Southern California to expand the data/sample collection. Since then the students have been processing the samples with plans to present their findings at professional conferences.

Cooper Fitness Center has temporarily relocated to Marano Campus Center Arena to provide a safe, spacious place for the campus community to engage in physical activity. In addition, group exercise classes will be offered and the upper concourse will be available to walk or jog. Before opening in time for Wednesday’s Wellness Day, Nick DiProspero (facing camera), a senior psychology major, was among the team of student workers, moving exercise bikes and other equipment. All students (and employees who choose to use the Fitness Center will be required to get tested weekly and show verification that they have tested and received a YES badge, have passed their health screening and must follow other masking and distancing guidelines.

Future Lakers and their families have been able to explore the campus with self-guided tours hosted by the college's Admissions Office. Kyle Schnauffer (left), from Chittenango, checks out the campus with his parents and sister. Schnauffer has been accepted at SUNY Oswego and has an interest in broadcasting. His mother Sharon (second from right) is a 1993 alumna. In addition to virtual visits, a recent program developed by the Office of Admissions and campus partners is the "SUNY Oswego Admitted Student Zone," a new virtual platform where admitted and deposited students and their families can engage with each other and the SUNY Oswego community.

Sustainability Office interns Jonathan Mills, a graduate student in art, and Sarah Smelko, a senior global studies major, show off some of the free winter clothing offered in Hewitt during an ongoing Warm-up Week winter clothing and gear giveaway, a collaboration between the Office of Sustainability and SHOP (Students Helping Oz Peers). The giveaway extends to Friday, Feb. 26.

One of Oswego's first significant snows of the season drapes the Sheldon statue in snow Feb. 11. As storms and unusually cold temperatures in southern states caused unforeseen problems from Texas and eastward, the Northeast began to experience increased snows that seemed to finally begin the typical winter weather pattern.

Atmospheric and geological sciences faculty member Scott Steiger teaches a meteorology class to students in the Shineman Center on Feb. 5, also the date of National Weather Person's Day. The day honors individuals in the fields of meteorology, weather forecasting and broadcast meteorology, as well as volunteer storm spotters and observers -- fields where many Oswego graduates have thrived. The date marks the birthday in 1774 of John Jeffries, one of the first weather observers to take daily weather measurements in Boston, and the first to use a weather balloon.

Taking advantage of one of these semi-private Oz Spots meeting and study areas open for use by anyone, this one in Tyler Hall lobby, are Halley Dellostritto, a studio art major, and Floyd Bourgeois, an adolescence education major. They are both second-semester junior transfer students from Onondaga Community College.

Emilio Jimenez, a freshman graphic design major and a Tyler Art Gallery attendant, looks at work on exhibit in the 58th annual Juried Student Art Exhibition. The show, which is open to any SUNY Oswego student working in any media, is open through March 18. Gallery hours are Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the exhibition is always viewable via the online gallery website.
