Award-winning journalist and author Stephen Kinzer (center) was the Oct. 12 keynote speaker for this year's Hart Hall Global Awareness Conference. The author of "Crescent and Star: Turkey Between Two Worlds" and a former Istanbul correspondent for the New York Times, Kinzer attracted an audience that included students, faculty such as Fehmi Damkaci (left), chair of the chemistry department, and Nobel prize winner Stanley Whittingham (right). Whittingham, a Distinguished Research Professor at Binghamton University and holder of the patent for the rechargeable lithium-ion battery, was announced last week as part of the team winning this year’s Nobel Prize for Chemistry. He is the husband of modern languages and literatures faculty member Georgina Whittingham.

A 2006 Oswego graduate and deputy editor of news and ideas for Vice, Michelle Garcia spoke to students in Catherine Loper's “Advanced Newswriting” class on Oct. 3 as part of the Oswego Alumni Association's Alumni-In-Residence program. Garcia, a School of Communication, Media and the Arts Advisory Board member, also served as the keynote speaker for the Oct. 5 Communication Studies Alumni Reunion and Dinner held in conjunction with Homecoming Weekend.

Students in Sandra Bargainnier’s Honors 301 “In Search of Meaning: What It Means to be a Refugee in Central New York” course have had out-of-classroom experiences to supplement their studies. On Oct. 12, “our class had lunch at Habiba's Ethiopian Kitchen in Syracuse and we were grateful to have Habiba share her story with the class about fleeing Ethiopia, living in a Kenyan refugee camp and resettling in America at age 14 with her aunt. After the great meal, we visited ArtRage in Syracuse to see the photo exhibit ‘Recreating Home: Photography of the Refugee Experience,’” Bargainnier said. The class has visited the Safe Haven Refugee Holocaust Museum in Oswego, and has hosted guest speakers from Bhutan, Somalia and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Author Norma Elia Cantu spoke at the Oct. 7 edition of the Living Writers Series. The Norine R. and T. Frank Murchison Professor in Humanities at Trinity University, Cantu’s more recent work includes the 20th anniversary edition of her book “Canícula: Snapshots of a Girlhood en la Frontera,” and two publications scheduled this year: her novel “Cabañuelas” and poetry collection “Meditación Fronteriza: Poems of Love, Life and Labor.”
