Dear members of the college community,

I am writing you this morning to report on a classroom disturbance that occurred yesterday on campus for which we now have appropriate details to share with you.

Please note you did not receive a campus alert on the matter yesterday as the members of our campus were not in any danger, according to University Police, who immediately responded to the reported disturbance.

At approximately 10:00 a.m., on Wednesday, University Police received a call about a student who was verbally disruptive in a classroom in the Marano Campus Center. Taking immediate action to ensure the safety of all on our campus, University Police officers located the student and promptly detained and questioned the student.

While searching the student, officers discovered an object that they believed might be hazardous, and immediately removed the student from the Marano Campus Center. A formal investigation commenced with the help of the Oswego City Fire Department, who quickly determined that the object was not hazardous, and confirmed that our campus community was never in any danger.

The student responsible for the disturbance has been arrested with one count of “attempted placing of a false bomb or hazardous substance” in the first degree, which is a Class E Felony.

Let this incident remind our campus community that if any of us becomes aware of something that we believe could be a threat to our campus and each other’s safety, that we immediately speak up and contact University Police at 315-312-5555, or call 911. I encourage each of you to save the University Police number to your cell phones, and download the free campus Guardian app, so you can be better equipped to report any emergency.

The safety and security of our students, faculty, staff and visitors are our number one priority, and we appreciate your help in protecting our campus and each other.
