An annual winter tradition bringing outdoor sports to the center of campus, Rail Jam plans a return from 1 to 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17.
Sponsored by the SUNY Oswego Ski and Snowboard Club, the event seeks skiers and riders of all abilities, with prizes and recreation.
Despite what has been an unusually non-snowy season to date, organizers are working on getting the snow needed for the event –- as they have some other years –- thanks to the grounds crew of the university’s Facilities Services operation.
“They’re great,” said Joe Dolan, president of the organization. “They’re always willing to help out.”
Rail Jam is already a testament to creativity and adaptability that provides a unique opportunity.
“It brings our club right to campus,” said Joe Dolan, president of the organization. “Most of our activities are far away, because we have travel to the mountains. It’s a good way to show people on campus what we do.”
The event will move slightly from the academic quad to the lawn south of Marano Campus Center, which includes a natural slope. Student media organizations will again partner with the Ski and Snowboard Club, as radio station WNYO will supply music and TV station WTOP is expected to provide coverage.
While the event showcases activities the club participates in, Dolan emphasizes that all students are invited to take part.
“We often see people we don’t normally see on other trips,” Dolan noted. “Rail skiing is more of a niche activity, and sometimes brings a different community.”
