DuPont Brass, a group of college musicians turned nine-piece brass ensemble, will bring their unique sound to Tyler Hall’s Waterman Theatre at 7 p.m. on Sept. 15.
The band’s website describes their sound as “eclectic soul,” one “that mixes varied genres of music, including jazz, hip-hop and R&B.”
DuPont Brass originates from the D.C. Metropolitan area. They began as a group of five students from Howard University “trying to raise money for tuition during the Christmas season,” their website noted.
The band gained traction through playing at metro stations, eventually leading them to begin performing at private events.
Since then, they have moved onto bigger stages, performing at festivals and having recently made their local television debut on PBS.
The group’s nine members each bring various instruments to the table, including brass, a rhythm section and vocalists.
The concert is brought to campus by ARTSwego, which focuses on bringing high-quality artists and performances to SUNY Oswego and its surrounding community.
“This upbeat performance blends so many styles of music; there will surely be something for everyone,” said Lowell Hutcheson, the interim director of arts programming for ARTSwego.
She said that in addition to their performance, DuPont Brass will also host two workshops during their time on campus.
The first workshop will consist of a visit to the students in a songwriting course taught by Paul Leary, an associate professor of music. The second will take place in the evening and focus on music business.
“[DuPont Brass’s] talent, hard work, and business skills grew the group from a small college band to a professional nine-person group that has performed on some of the biggest stages,” Hutcheson said. “Their time with our students will provide invaluable insight into how to succeed in the industry.”
Tickets can be acquired through SUNY Oswego’s box office, either in person at Marano Campus Center or online at tickets.oswego.edu. Tickets are free for SUNY Oswego students, $5 for other students and $20 for the general public.
