Creative writing major Isaiah Bedoar will take on a new challenge this Friday, Oct. 4, engaging with author and SUNY Oswego professor Soma Mei Sheng Frazier in a public conversation about "Off the Books," Frazier’s debut novel, at 7 p.m. in Liverpool's Golden Bee Bookshop.

Born and raised in Syracuse, Bedoar describes themselves as a “witchy poet.” Their work frequently addresses homelessness, urban life and the breathless feeling that magic exists all around. “I’m looking to not only advance myself as a local writer, but as a person who nourishes the inherent spiritual nature of the greater Syracuse area,” Bedoar explained.

"Off the Books" was released this year by Macmillan to positive reviews from The New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Kirkus, Publisher’s Weekly and others.

“Isaiah is an excellent interlocutor,” Frazier said, “and their role as my public conversation partner mirrors what they’ve done in so many of SUNY Oswego’s creative writing classes: they’ll analyze a piece of writing, discussing its themes, structure and craft.”

Students and faculty interested in hearing Bedoar and Frazier in conversation can catch them at the bookstore, located at 324 1st St. in Liverpool; find more information on this website. Frazier also appeared on WSYR NewsChannel 9’s "Bridge Street" on Oct. 1 to talk about the book.
