The Office of the Dean of Students’ Alcohol and Other Drug Program recently received 100 Deterra drug deactivation bags, provided by the Oswego County Prevention Coalition. The bags were acquired through a grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

Drug deactivation bags are offered to students free of charge through on-campus vending machines for quick and anonymous access to safely dispose of unused, unwanted, or expired medications. This harm reduction strategy helps to prevent accidental poisoning, reduces prescription drug misuse or abuse, and protects water systems from contamination.

The Deterra bags will be available in Oswego’s “Health Hub” vending machines. Health Hub vending machines are located in the 24-hour study room in Penfield Library and the Laker Lounge in Marano Campus Center. In addition to the new Deterra bags, these vending machines also offer personal care and sexual wellness items.
