The college theatre department will host Zoom rehearsals for three upcoming productions on Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 2 and 3, via Zoom.
Students can audition for “In the Cotton,” “The Misanthrope” and “Dog Sees God,” which all will be staged readings and feature virtual rehearsals, said theatre professor Jonel Langenfeld-Rial. Auditions will begin at approximately 6:30 p.m. both days.
Auditioners will need to fill out a form, as well as sign up for an audition time via a separate link.
“Please prepare two 60 to 90-second monologues: a modern dramatic monologue and a period comedic monologue,” Langenfeld-Rial said. She recommended auditioners consider Shakespeare, Molière and other classical authors’ works, which can imply skill with heightened text.
Rehearsals and performances for “In the Cotton” and “The Misanthrope” will take place entirely online. “You do not need to be present on campus to participate,” Langenfeld-Rial said.
Staged readings
“There will be minimal costuming and staging, for a staged reading is intended to focus on the words of the play and the work of the playwright,” Langenfeld-Rial said of the productions. “We felt having staged readings for three of our performances would be the best way to provide opportunities for as many students as possible, while also delivering theatre department programming for the campus and local community.”
“In the Cotton,” a drama about racial tensions, will have five virtual performances directed by theatre faculty member Stephen York Sept. 25 to 27.
“The Misanthrope,” a 17th-century comedy of manners by Molière and directed by theatre faculty member and 2006 alumnus Steve Mazzaccone, also will have five virtual performances, from Oct. 16 to 18.
“Dog Sees God” -- a comedy that re-imagines the “Peanuts” universe -- will be the annual student honors production, directed by Gio Rodriguez on dates to be determined in the spring semester.
Some logistics behind the productions are still coming together, but appropriate distancing and safety precautions will take place.
