SUNY Oswego will begin offering a new minor in graphic design this fall, providing the tools for visual communication, visual literacy and problem solving to students in disciplines across campus.
“These skill sets are increasingly valuable across a number of government and industry sectors,” said art department chair Cynthia Clabough. “Graduates from our degree programs offered on campus, such as communications, broadcasting, business, cinema and screen studies, technology education, information science, journalism and public relations, benefit by expanding the training available to them.”
Accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design, the art department has added the new minor to equip students to identify methods, tools and strategies for design planning, production, publication and distribution; develop technical, typographic, perceptual and visual organization skills; and evaluate design solutions using the elements and principles of design.
The curriculum includes digital media, multimedia and web media courses, as well as art history and foundational coursework.
While many students outside the art majors already take some electives within graphic design, “we do think that by making the discipline more obvious and easier for students to locate, Oswego will draw more students to the program,” Clabough said.
Graphic design, already an established and popular undergraduate major and graduate degree program at the college, joins other art department or multidisciplinary minors that include art, art history, art management, expressive arts therapy, museum studies and photography.
