Accomplished concert instrumentalists Trevor Jorgensen on saxophone, oboe and clarinet and accompanist Robert Auler on piano will present a Focus on Faculty recital titled "Timepieces" at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 25, in SUNY Oswego's Sheldon Hall ballroom.
While the title honors a signature work of Robert Muczynski, a distinguished American neo-classical composer, it also relates to three other offerings in the SUNY Oswego music department's Focus on Faculty concert: Jennifer Higdon's "Saxophone Concerto," Michael Torke's own "Saxophone Concerto" and "Sonata for Oboe" by Camille Saint-Saëns.
"The title 'Timepieces' was chosen because not only is the Muczynski clarinet piece titled 'Time Pieces,' but the concert primarily consists of relatively modern works that are rhythmically exciting and driving," Jorgensen said.
"The only exception is the Saint-Saëns 'Oboe Sonata,' and that was selected due to circumstance and opportunity -- I am playing the oboe and English horn book in Oswego High School's production of 'Sweeney Todd,' and SUNY Oswego has recently had an influx of oboe students."
Jorgensen said he chose the saxophone pieces for personal and professional interest as well.
"I have always loved Torke’s soprano saxophone concerto, and I was introduced to Jennifer Higdon by a former teacher several years ago and have been looking forward to doing her piece," he said.
Tickets for the "Timepieces" recital are $8 ($5 for students) and are available at the door starting 30 minutes before the concert.
Parking is included in the price of the ticket, and is available in the employee and commuter lots adjacent to and across Washington Boulevard from Sheldon Hall. Patrons needing assistance should call 315-312-2141 in advance of the concert.
