Recognition Opportunities and Awards

There are many opportunities for recognition of excellence in teaching, service, scholarship, creative activity, and librarianship at SUNY Oswego. Faculty and staff are encouraged to nominate peers for the following awards. Nominations should be proposed well in advance of deadlines in order to allow nominees ample time to prepare support folios.

Excellence Awards

President's Award for Teaching Excellence


Initial Nominations: Due Fourth Monday in February
Nominees' Portfolio: Due Fourth Monday in March

The President's Award for Teaching Excellence is intended to annually recognize one full-time faculty member who has demonstrated extraordinary success in fostering student learning and is thereby enhancing the collective learning environment at SUNY Oswego. The award recipient will be honored at the annual Academic Affairs Retreat and will receive an appropriate symbol of the honor (e.g., a plaque) and an appropriate monetary award (e.g., $1,000).

President's Award for Excellence in Faculty Service


Initial Nominations: Due October 15, by 5pm
Nominees' Portfolio: Due December 1, by 5pm

The President’s Award for Excellence in Faculty Service is intended to annually recognize one faculty member who has demonstrated extraordinary service to the campus, the community and the world. To be eligible for the award individuals must have been full-time faculty for at least five consecutive years. The award recipient will be honored at the annual Academic Affairs Retreat, and will receive an appropriate symbol of the honor (e.g., a plaque) and an appropriate monetary award (e.g., $1,000).

President's Award for Excellence in Academic Advisement


Initial Nominations: Due Last Monday of March

All students at the State University of New York at Oswego are invited to nominate faculty and staff members for the President's Award for Excellence in Academic Advisement. Persons nominated for this award should be "wise and trusted counselors" who aid students in the formation and development of their academic and life goals. The recipient of this award will receive a certificate and $200.

President's Award for Excellence in Professional Staff Service


Initial Nominations: Due October 15, by, 5pm
Nominees' Portfolio: Due December 1, by, 5pm

The President’s Award for Excellence in Professional Staff Service is an annual award granted to an individual whose outstanding service improves the college and its services. This award will recognize professional staff members who in addition to excellence in assigned responsibilities serve the college and community in a variety of ways. The intent of the award is to appropriately honor an outstanding professional staff member who demonstrates exceptional service in her or his contribution to the central mission of our College, and provides exemplary models of what it takes to make SUNY Oswego a community of excellence. The award recipient will be honored at the annual Academic Affairs Retreat, and will receive an appropriate symbol of the honor (e.g., a plaque) and an appropriate monetary award (e.g., $1,000).

The Provost's Award for Teaching Excellence is intended to annually recognize one part-time faculty member who has demonstrated extraordinary success in fostering student learning and is thereby enhancing the collective learning environment at SUNY Oswego. The award recipient will be honored at the annual Academic Affairs Retreat and will receive an appropriate symbol of the honor (e.g., a plaque) and an appropriate monetary award (e.g., $500).

Scholarly and Creative Activity Awards

This President's Award shall be awarded annually by the President of SUNY Oswego to those who are full- time faculty or staff with continuous appointment. Furthermore, those nominated are required to have a minimum seven years of service at SUNY Oswego. This award is designed as recognition of a career highlighting significant accomplishments in scholarly or creative activity. The award recipient will be honored at the annual Academic Affairs Retreat and will receive a certificate and monetary award ($1,000).

Provost's Award for Scholarly and Creative Activity


Initial Nominations: Due Fourth Monday of February, by 4:30pm
Nominees' Portfolio: Due Fourth Monday of March, by 4:30pm

The Provost's Award for Scholarly and Creative Activity shall be awarded annually by the Provost of SUNY Oswego to a junior member or members of the full-time faculty and staff on term appointment. Furthermore, those nominated are required to have a minimum of two years and no more than seven years of service at SUNY Oswego. The award recipient will be honored at the annual Academic Affairs Retreat and will receive a certificate and monetary award ($500).

Provost's Award for Mentoring in Scholarly and Creative Activity

This Provost's Award shall be awarded annually by the Provost of SUNY Oswego. This award is designed as recognition of a career highlighting significant accomplishments in mentoring students in scholarly or creative activities. The award recipient will be honored at the annual Academic Affairs Retreat and will receive a certificate and monetary award ($1,000).

Chancellor's Awards

Overview

The Chancellor's Awards for Excellence are System-level honors conferred to acknowledge and provide system-wide recognition for consistently superior professional achievement and to encourage the ongoing pursuit of excellence.  These programs underscore SUNY’s commitment to sustaining intellectual vibrancy, advancing the boundaries of knowledge, providing the highest quality of instruction, and serving the public good.  Through these awards, SUNY publicly proclaims its pride in the accomplishment and personal dedication of its instructional faculty, librarians and professional staff across its campuses.  

Each year a call goes out for nominees for SUNY Chancellor's Awards and Distinguished Professorships.  Below is a current list of awards available.  If nominated, nominees must provide nomination folios for consideration by the Chancellor's Award Review Committee.  

SUNY Chancellor's Award available for:

  • Excellence in Teaching
  • Excellence in Adjunct Teaching
  • Excellence in Faculty Service
  • Excellence in Librarianship
  • Excellence in Scholarly and Creative Activities 
  • Excellence in Shared Governance

Nomination and Deadline Information

SUNY Oswego is authorized to submit up to four nominations each for the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching and the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Adjunct Teaching. SUNY Oswego is also authorized to submit one nomination each for the Chancellor's Awards for Excellence in Librarianship, Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities, and Excellence in Faculty Service. Recipients will receive a certificate and a medal. 

Those who are nominating an individual for a specific Chancellor's award, must submit a nomination letter by 4:30pm on October 16, 2023. Letters of nomination for any Chancellor's Award may be submitted using this Google Form.

Nominees will be contacted in mid October, and asked to submit a portfolio to the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs by 4:30pm on November 17, 2023.

Distinguished Faculty Awards

Overview

Distinguished Faculty Rank programs encourage an ongoing commitment to excellence, kindle intellectual vibrancy, elevate the standards of instruction and enrich contributions to public service. They demonstrate the State University’s pride and gratitude for the consummate professionalism, the groundbreaking scholarship, the exceptional instruction and the breadth and significance of service contributions of its faculty. The Chancellor's Award Review Committee also deliberates on nominations for Distinguished Faculty Ranks.

Awards are available for:

  • Distinguished Professor
  • Distinguished Service Professor
  • Distinguished Teaching Professor
  • Distinguished Librarian

Nomination and Deadline Information

Those who are nominating an individual for a Distinguished Faculty Award, must submit a nomination letter by 4:30pm on October 16, 2023. Letters of nomination for any Distinguished Faculty Award may be submitted using this Google Form.

Nominees will be contacted in mid October, and asked to submit a portfolio to the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs by 4:30pm on November 17, 2023.

SUNY Awards and Promotions Selection Committee

Overview

The process by which SUNY Oswego recommends nominees for SUNY Awards and the promotion to Distinguished Professorships involves the actions of a selection committee.  

The selection committee is responsible for soliciting campus nominations, reviewing nomination files, evaluating all nominees, and ranking nominations as a recommendation for action by the President.

The composition of the selection committee is as follows:

  • One voting faculty member, each with a minimum of ten years of service at SUNY Oswego, from:
    • School of Business
    • School of Education
    • College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
    • School of Communication, Media and the Arts
  • One at-large voting faculty member
  • One professional staff member
  • One voting faculty member with distinguished rank
  • One Librarian
  • Two undergraduate students
  • One graduate student
  • Ongoing Members:
    • Chair of Faculty Assembly (or designee)
    • One administrative liaison designated by the President (ex-officio committee member)

Nomination and Deadline Information

This year (2023-2024), nominations are requested for the following committee members (numbers of vacancies within each category are provided):

  • Undergraduate Students (2)
  • Graduate Student (1)
  • Faculty, School of Business (1)
  • Faculty, School of Education (1)
  • Faculty, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (1)
  • At-large voting faculty member (1)

To nominate individuals to serve on the review committee, please complete the SUNY Award Selection Committee Nomination Form.

Any student, administrator, voting faculty, or professional staff member may make any number of nominations for selection committee membership.

Nominations for the selection committee are due Friday, October 13, 2023.

Voting faculty and students will be asked to vote for nominees via Google Forms, shortly after this date.

Award of Excellence in Research and Sponsored Programs

Additionally, ORSP awards medals for individuals who have reached certain benchmarks for funding received in external grants during their time at SUNY Oswego. Please take some time to learn about these benchmarks, and review our previous award winners.
